How To Score Using Wing Ball Screens – TURN THE CORNER

Ball screens are one of the most popular and effective actions in today’s game. There are many types of ball screens, however more important than the type of ball screen is how the defense is playing the screen. Most attack reads can be performed on a variety of screens. For example, a chase ball screen can be rejected in the same fashion as a wing ball screen if the defender ices or jumps early. TURN THE CORNER SPEED ATTACK

This is the traditional way to attack the ball screen. This attack is trying to get the offensive player going downhill and attacking the screener’s defender. When turning the corner it is crucial that the ball handler is strong with the ball as they are usually attacking a bigger longer defender. This is why the ball handler must be able to finish from a variety of angles, with either hand and off either foot.

KEYS:

  • Take the ball handler below the screen
  • Attack the screen hard looking to turn the corner
  • Tag or wrap your screener to close the gap and force the defender under
  • Ball handler must be low and explosive
  • Attack defenders outside hip
  • Can use a bait dribble to move help defender on the attack downhill

OPTIONS: 

  • High and tight finishes
  • Extension finishes
  • Stretch finishes
  • bump off separations

TURN THE CORNER SEPARATE TO SPACE

This option of turning the corner to separate to space is a good option for players with a good mid-range game with touch to knock down shots and floaters. It is also important for offensive players to be under control and have a good secondary move when the defense recovers.

KEYS:

  • Take the ball handler below the screen
  • Attack the screen hard looking to turn the corner
  • Tag or wrap your screener to close the gap and force the defender under
  • Ball handler must be low and explosive
  • Attack defenders to space to create separation

  • floater/push shot
  • Shot fake step through
